For years, development has been guided by a compelling idea. If we empower individuals to start businesses, economic growth will follow. This belief has shaped funding strategies, entrepreneurship programs, and entire ecosystems of support designed to “unlock local potential.” It is not wrong, but it is incomplete. Because what this narrative often overlooks is the environment in which these businesses are expected to grow.

Through our work in rural Kenya, we see a different reality every day. Smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs are not operating in functioning markets. They are navigating fragmented systems shaped by unpredictable pricing, limited access to storage, weak infrastructure, lack of timely information, and minimal access to affordable capital. In this context, entrepreneurship is not primarily driven by opportunity. It is driven by necessity. People build businesses not because the system enables them, but because it leaves them no alternative. This distinction matters because necessity-driven entrepreneurship rarely leads to sustainable economic growth. It leads to subsistence, to low productivity, and to high vulnerability.

And yet, much of development funding continues to focus on the individual. It focuses on skills, on training, and on micro-level interventions without sufficiently addressing the systems that define what is actually possible. At the same time, large-scale development investments have often struggled to deliver lasting impact. This is not because systems do not matter, but because they have too often been designed without the people they are meant to serve. Top-down approaches frequently fail to reflect local realities, and they prioritize outputs over long-term outcomes. This creates a false choice between investing in people or investing in systems.

Sustainable development, however, requires both.

At MOTHERLAND, our work is built on this premise. We focus on strengthening local economic ecosystems rather than isolated actors or standalone infrastructure. This means working at multiple levels simultaneously.

We collaborate with farmer-led Local Impact Teams that build trust, coordination, and ownership within communities. At the same time, we invest in enabling infrastructure such as digital tools, data systems, and partnerships that connect these communities to markets, knowledge, and services.

Our WhatsApp-based AI companion, Lima, is one example of this approach. It provides farmers with access to timely and context-specific information, from soil health to post-harvest handling to market insights, directly on devices they already use. This is not a standalone solution, but part of a broader system designed to increase productivity, reduce losses, and improve decision-making. Because information is not a luxury. It is infrastructure.

By combining local ownership with systemic enablement, we aim to shift from survival-based activity to opportunity-driven growth. We move from fragmented efforts to coordinated ecosystems and from short-term outputs to long-term resilience. This approach also requires a shift in how impact is understood. Success is not only measured by the number of individuals trained or businesses created. It is reflected in whether farmers can increase yields sustainably, whether they can access reliable markets, and whether income becomes predictable enough to plan beyond the next season.

For funders, this means engaging with a different kind of investment logic. It means moving beyond isolated interventions toward ecosystem-building. It means thinking in longer time horizons and accepting that impact is often the result of interconnected elements rather than a single activity. This is more complex, but it is also more honest and ultimately more effective.

Because development is not constrained by a lack of effort at the individual level. It is constrained by the systems in which individuals operate. If we want to unlock real economic potential, we cannot continue to shift responsibility downward. We cannot expect those with the least resources to overcome the greatest structural barriers on their own. We need to invest in the conditions that make growth possible. We need systems that enable, people who build within them, and strong connections between the two.

This is the work we are committed to at MOTHERLAND - an ecosystem orchestrator.

And this is where we see the greatest opportunity for meaningful, scalable impact.

When MOTHERLAND and peachstone.ai began developing Lima - our digital training the trainer extension of MOTHERLAND - in mid 2025, we were not trying to build another digital agriculture tool. We were trying to solve a deeper structural challenge inside MOTHERLAND’s operations: how to deliver consistent, high-quality internal training across many villages, to a growing Local Impact Team, in a way that remains human, intuitive and trusted.

The first version of Lima already proved that WhatsApp-based learning can strengthen internal workflows, reduce preparation time and make complex information accessible in low-connectivity environments. But one insight emerged very early in the design process: if Lima was going to support our team effectively, she needed to feel like someone, not something.

In the communities where MOTHERLAND works, information is not received neutrally. It is received relationally. People listen differently depending on who speaks, how they speak and whether they feel understood. Even internally, the Local Impact Team relies on trust-based communication, shared language patterns and cultural rhythms. A purely technical system would never be able to create the comfort, familiarity or clarity that our team needs in their daily work.

This is why Lima was given a human face, long before she was ever given technical features.

A design process built on listening

Before any model was trained or interface built, MOTHERLAND and peachstone.ai spent several weeks in dialogue with women’s groups, youth leaders and community members in Siaya County. These conversations focused on how people communicate on WhatsApp, how they explain farming concepts to each other and which tones feel supportive rather than instructional. The conversations were practical, grounded and often deeply honest.

One sentence appeared again and again, no matter the age or background of the speaker: “She should sound like someone from here.”

It became the core design principle. Lima’s personality, her tone, her choice of words, her pace, her clarity was shaped around this idea of familiarity. Even though the system is used internally by MOTHERLAND’s staff, the team itself is rooted in the same communities. The way people speak, learn and relate to each other in Siaya County directly influences how effectively digital learning materials are absorbed, remembered and applied.

Human presence as a learning strategy

Giving Lima a personality was therefore not a cosmetic decision; it was a functional one. Research from human computer interaction consistently shows that conversational agents with a clear, relatable identity increase engagement and retention. Motherland’s field experience confirmed this as well. Team members are more likely to ask follow-up questions, revisit materials and explore new modules when the communication feels natural and not abstract.

Lima was designed to mirror the qualities of a trusted neighbour: she is warm, patient, clear and never judgmental. She speaks in short, accessible sentences that match the tempo of daily life in rural Kenya, where a message might be read while preparing a field demonstration or walking between homesteads. This human-centred design reduces cognitive load and lowers the barriers that often exist when new technology is introduced.

Cultural intelligence embedded into design

One of the most defining aspects of Lima’s development was understanding the cultural and linguistic nuances that shape how learning flows in Siaya County. People prefer explanations that are direct but not abrupt, friendly but not overly casual, and practical rather than abstract. Lima’s voice was fine-tuned to reflect these nuances.

In practice, this means that Lima explains concepts using everyday references familiar to the Local Impact Team: the smell of wet soil after the first rain, the steps of drying beans safely, or the small details that separate healthy compost from poor compost. The goal was not to anthropomorphise technology, but to ensure that the digital companion aligned with local ways of knowing and teaching.

Even internal training benefits from this. When a digital system speaks in a familiar rhythm, new information feels less foreign, and team members absorb more in less time.

A companion, not a replacement

Throughout the process, one principle guided the collaboration: Lima should never replace human relationships. She should strengthen them. This aligns directly with Motherland’s organisational philosophy and the Cisco Foundation’s commitment to human-centred technology. The Local Impact Team remains at the heart of all farmer-facing training. Lima simply ensures that the knowledge they carry is organised, standardised and instantly accessible.

By giving Lima a human presence, the project acknowledges something essential: learning is emotional. People learn best when they feel confident, respected and supported. The Local Impact Team works in environments where trust is built over months and years. A digital companion that feels cold or distant would add friction. A companion that feels relatable reduces it.

A foundation for what comes next

The decision to give Lima a human face is already influencing the next phases of development. As the system expands towards supporting new team members, new modules and additional languages in 2026, her persona will help ensure consistency across regions and cohorts. Whether she delivers an onboarding sequence, explains a soil health concept or guides a first-time team member through a post-harvest demonstration, her voice will remain stable, familiar and grounded in the community MOTHERLAND serves.

As Lima evolves, she will continue to embody the principle that shaped her creation: technology is most powerful when it feels like a partner. By integrating human presence with digital capability, MOTHERLAND, PeachStone and the Cisco Foundation are demonstrating that AI for rural transformation does not need to be complex to be effective. It needs to be relatable, trustworthy and rooted in the realities of the people who will use it.

Lima represents this convergence. She is the first step within our ecosystem toward a future where internal learning for agricultural field teams becomes faster, more consistent and more culturally aligned, without ever losing the human connection that makes MOTHERLAND’s work so effective.

In a world that measures impact by speed, reach, and volume, Truphena Muthoni chose something radically different: stillness.

For seventy-two uninterrupted hours, the young Kenyan environmental advocate remained physically connected to a single tree. She did not shout, march, or demand attention. She stayed. What might have appeared, at first glance, as a quiet personal gesture unfolded into a powerful public moment, capturing national attention and sparking widespread conversations across Kenya about the value of trees, the pace of deforestation, and the fragile state of the country’s landscapes.

The simplicity of the act was precisely what made it so compelling. By choosing one tree and committing her full body and time to it, Truphena stripped environmental activism down to its essence. Trees, she reminded the public, are not abstract symbols or background scenery. They are living systems that hold soil together, regulate water cycles, cool the air, support biodiversity, and make farming and rural life possible. Without them, food systems weaken, water becomes scarce, and communities grow more vulnerable.

Remaining in one place for three days required discipline and resolve. The physical discomfort, fatigue, and mental strain were part of the message. Truphena’s endurance mirrored the patience that ecosystems themselves require and highlighted how much effort is often demanded from nature while so little is consciously returned. Her stillness became a form of resistance against a culture that consumes land quickly and moves on without repair.

What made the challenge particularly powerful was its accessibility. There was no barrier to understanding her message. Anyone, regardless of age or background, could grasp the meaning of protecting a tree by staying with it. In this way, Truphena opened a door for many, especially young people, to see environmental care not as a technical or distant issue, but as a personal and ethical responsibility.

Her action also reframed leadership. Rather than positioning herself above others, Truphena placed herself alongside the living world she was advocating for. She did not speak on behalf of trees; she stood with one. This gesture resonated deeply in a country where environmental degradation is increasingly visible, from disappearing tree cover to declining soil fertility and water insecurity.

The response showed that people are ready for a different kind of environmental narrative. One that is grounded in presence rather than performance. One that values consistency over spectacle. Truphena’s 72-hour embrace did not offer easy solutions, but it asked an essential question: what would change if care were practiced as deliberately as extraction? Her action stands as a reminder that individual choices, when made with clarity and courage, can influence public consciousness. In slowing down, she invited an entire nation to pause, observe, and reconsider its relationship with the natural world.

How MOTHERLAND and PeachStone AI, supported by the Cisco Foundation, are building a WhatsApp-based internal learning system to enable our Local Impact Teams to serve more farmer communities in Kenya by 2026.

At the beginning of 2025, MOTHERLAND found itself at a strategic turning point. Our Local Impact Team in Siaya County were performing exceptionally well, delivering regenerative agriculture training, conducting field demonstrations and supporting farmer networks across several villages. Their work was consistent, trusted and deeply rooted in the community. But it was also constrained by time, geography and the physical realities of rural extension work.

MOTHERALND’s ambition to enter new communities was growing, driven by rising demand from farmers and local leaders, yet our team’s capacity could not expand at the same pace. We realised that supporting more farmers did not simply require “more staff”: it required a smarter internal system. A tool that made our local teams faster, more consistent, better coordinated and less dependent on repeated in-person sessions.

It was this gap that led to the birth of Lima, made possible through the collaboration with the Cisco Foundation.

Why Lima Exists: A Tool for MOTHERLAND’s Team, Not the Farmers

Unlike many digital agriculture tools that target farmers directly, Lima was intentionally designed for MOTHERLAND’s Local Impact Team. Her purpose is not to replace trainers or digitise fieldwork; her purpose is to multiply their capacity. Lima supports the team by streamlining internal training processes, organising knowledge, making learning materials accessible on WhatsApp and ensuring that the quality of our training remains consistent across all villages we work in.

This is crucial because the challenges facing our team are not small. Climate shifts shorten planting windows. Soil conditions vary between neighbouring farms. Market dynamics change weekly. And community training sessions often have to be repeated multiple times for different groups. Without support, scaling responsibly would be slow.

Lima therefore acts as MOTHERLAND’s extended internal digital backbone, giving the field team a reliable, always-available learning companion that helps standardise their work, guide new team members and support expansion into new regions without diluting the quality of our approach.

A WhatsApp-Based Digital Companion Built for Low-Connectivity Environments

Lima works entirely within WhatsApp, because WhatsApp is the most widely used communication channel across rural Kenya. This makes the system intuitive and instantly usable for all Local Impact Team members.

PeachStone AI developed an infrastructure specifically adapted to MOTHERLAND’s unique operating reality. The backend is hosted on AWS and supports low-bandwidth environments, allowing Lima to deliver content and internal training materials even in villages with weak networks. A semantic search engine enables team members to retrieve information quickly, whether they are preparing a community session, reviewing soil health concepts or planning a post-harvest demonstration.

Lima also includes a structured onboarding and consent flow, compressed PDF delivery, image optimisation and an internal user-management system that helps MOTHERLAND track how team members interact with the material. The alpha version has already been tested internally, successfully delivering learning materials, answering internal queries and supporting the team during planning and preparation.

Why Lima Has a Personality, Even Though She Is a Team Tool

Even though Lima is used by staff and not by farmers yet, she was intentionally designed to feel like a human companion rather than a technical system. Research from the Stanford HCI Group and the work of Reeves & Nass in The Media Equation consistently show that conversational agents with clear, relatable identities increase engagement, trust and recall, even among professionals.

MOTHERLAND engaged women’s groups, youth leaders and community representatives to explore how people in Siaya communicate on WhatsApp. Their insights shaped Lima’s personality: warm, clear, friendly, approachable and culturally relevant.

One participant summed it up perfectly: “She should sound like someone from here, like talking to a neighbour.”

This philosophy guided the development of her tone, her rhythm and her way of explaining concepts. Even internally, Lima feels like a colleague, one who is always available, always patient and always consistent.

Content Designed to Strengthen the Team

While the technical infrastructure was being developed, MOTHERLAND’s content team created seven comprehensive learning modules focused on key agricultural topics: regenerative soil practices, crop production, composting, erosion control, post-harvest management, market access and safe digital behaviour. These modules were transformed into compact, visually supported PDFs optimised for low connectivity.

For Local Impact Team members, these modules act as a unified reference system. Everyone trains with the same baseline knowledge, receives the same explanations and prepares their farmer-facing sessions with the same materials. This consistency is essential when building trust across multiple villages.

The hybrid model that emerges is powerful. Lima supports the internal learning and preparation work, while the Local Impact Team brings the human connection, contextual knowledge and practical demonstrations that only real field presence can deliver.

Dialogue, Learning Loops and Real-Time Insight

One of Lima’s most important features is that she is not a static library. She is a dialogue partner. Every time a team member asks a question, requests clarification or opens a module, this interaction becomes part of a real-time insight system. Motherland can immediately see which topics require more attention, which areas cause confusion and which modules need refinement.

PeachStone AI highlighted this continuous monitoring loop as a critical aspect of scalability t0 ensures that MOTHERLND grows based on evidence, not assumptions. It also enables the organisation to prepare its team more effectively for the diverse realities in the field.

Built for Expansion into New Communities

Every layer of Lima is engineered to support MOTHERLAND’s expansion strategy. As the organisation enters new communities, the Local Impact Team can rely on Lima to deliver foundational training internally within days, not weeks.

By early 2026, Lima is planned to support both English and Kiswahili, deliver structured internal learning journeys, provide audio-based content and guide new staff members step by step through key concepts. This capability allows MOTHERLAND to grow into new regions without compromising the depth, accuracy or consistency of its work.

The Cisco Foundation’s support therefore enables more than a technology project. It enables MOTHERLAND to build another vital digital component necessary for long-term, community-led scaling.

What Comes Next

The next development phase includes a structured pilot with the Local Impact Team to reach 50 more farmers towards the end of 2025. Their interactions will guide improvements in Lima’s behaviour, content flow and training pathways. By 2026, Lima is expected to evolve into one of the first WhatsApp-based internal agriculture companions in East Africa, designed to strengthen a field team rather than to bypass it.

This approach reflects MOTHERLAND’s philosophy: meaningful agricultural transformation requires trusted relationships, community presence and human leadership. Technology should support the people doing the work, not replace them.

Across East Africa, the conversation around agricultural innovation has for years circled around apps, off-taker platforms, field logistics and price transparency tools. But while most interventions remain at the visible end of the value chain, the true leverage point remains untouched: the seed itself. Without resilient, locally adapted, regeneratively produced seed, every other innovation stays cosmetic. It reaches the field, but never the roots.

At MOTHERLAND, after working with more than two thousand smallholder farmers, we see the same pattern everywhere: fluctuating yields, soils losing vitality, and a growing dependence on expensive external inputs. It’s a global crisis, the FAO estimates that more than 33 percent of the world’s soils are degraded but in Africa the consequences are immediate and unforgiving.

Nobel Laureate and soil scientist Rattan Lal captures it clearly: “Soil is the soul of food security.” When the soul weakens, everything downstream collapses.

This is where MOTHERLAND’s work begins.

We are building something in Western Kenya that may look small at first glance but acts systemically: locally produced, climate-resilient, regenerative seed, developed and distributed through our community-led Local Impact Teams. Every seed lot we produce changes how families see their land, their risk and their future. It shifts the entire balance between uncertainty and opportunity. And it creates value, deep, long-term value.

Because seed is not a consumable; seed is infrastructure. It determines yield, household income, nutritional stability, and climate resilience. A single kilogram of high-quality foundation seed influences the entire annual cycle of a farming family. It determines whether the harvest will be enough, whether investments can be made, whether reserves can be built, or whether the next climate shock wipes everything out again. But here lies a truth that many development programs overlook:

Even the best seed model collapses without a market.

MOTHERLAND‘s approach works because it doesn’t isolate production from demand. We don’t ask farmers to grow seeds and “hope” that someone will buy them. We have built and, proven a structure in which seed production is bundled, quality-assured, and connected to a guaranteed off-taker. This single element changes everything. It turns regenerative seed from a risk into a genuinely viable income pathway.

The presence of a committed buyer creates predictability. Predictability builds trust. Trust accelerates adoption. And adoption is what transforms local agriculture from subsistence-based fragility to a regenerative, community-led economy.

In regions where certified seed is scarce and fragmented, MOTHERLAND is not only improving access but actively building production capacity with built-in market linkage. It keeps value within the community instead of extracting it. It reduces risk for farmers. And it grounds the entire seed system in economic reality, not idealism.

Seed also sits at a rare intersection where ecological, economic and social benefits reinforce one another. High-quality, regeneratively produced foundation seed uplifts soil structure, increases productivity, and stabilizes incomes. When these seeds are combined with the knowledge our teams deliver: soil tests, regenerative training, and AI-supported guidance, the effect compounds year after year. It is not a symbolic intervention; it is a multiplier.

And as we prepare to scale to another thousand farmers in the coming year, and thousands more after that, it is this integrated seed-and-market model that forms the backbone. Every new Local Impact Team expands not only learning capacity but also seed production and seed market capacity, a dual engine of resilience.

Sometimes the most radical innovation is the one that goes back to the beginning: the seed.

In Spanien breitet sich Wüstenboden aus, in Frankreich verliert der Boden jährlich Millimeter an fruchtbarer Schicht.

Und überall dort, wo Böden sterben, sterben auch Hoffnung, Artenvielfalt und Ernährungssicherheit.

Die FAO warnt: „Ein Drittel der weltweiten landwirtschaftlichen Flächen gilt heute als degradiert, mit massiven Folgen für Klima, Wasser und Ernährungssicherheit.“

Doch Afrika steht im Zentrum dieser Geschichte – nicht, weil es das größte Problem hat, sondern weil es die größte Chance trägt.

Warum Afrika entscheidend ist, für sich selbst und für Europa

Afrika ist der jüngste Kontinent der Erde, reich an Sonne, Wasser, fruchtbarem Land und menschlicher Kreativität. Mehr als 60 Prozent der ungenutzten fruchtbaren Böden der Welt liegen in Afrika. Das bedeutet: Hier entscheidet sich, ob die Landwirtschaft der Zukunft regenerativ oder zerstörerisch wird. Wenn Afrika seinen eigenen Weg geht, weg von chemischer Abhängigkeit, hin zu lokaler Ernährungssouveränität und regenerativen Märkten –, verändert das nicht nur Afrika, sondern auch Europa. Denn die Zukunft Europas hängt enger mit Afrika zusammen, als viele wahrhaben wollen. Unsere Ernährungssysteme, unsere Märkte, unsere Migration, unser Klima, alles ist miteinander verwoben.

Das World Resources Institute Africa schreibt „Afrikas Ernährungssysteme stehen vor sinkender Produktivität, hauptsächlich aufgrund schlechter Bodengesundheit, verursacht durch Nährstoffverluste, Erosion und niedrigen Humusgehalt.“ WRI Africa, Food Systems Strategy 2024 – 2027

Wenn Böden in Afrika weiter erodieren, betrifft das globale Lieferketten, Handelsbeziehungen und soziale Stabilität. Afrikas Regeneration ist also keine entfernte Vision, sondern eine menschheitliche Aufgabe. Und sie ist Europas Chance, seine Beziehung zu Afrika neu zu gestalten – auf Augenhöhe, im Austausch von Wissen, nicht von Abhängigkeit.

Die wahren Held:innen – Bäuerinnen und Bauern Afrikas

Mehr als zwei Drittel aller Menschen in Afrika leben direkt oder indirekt von der Landwirtschaft. Die meisten bewirtschaften kleine Felder, oft nicht größer als ein Fußballfeld. Sie arbeiten mit bloßen Händen, mit uraltem Wissen, mit Samen, die ihre Großeltern schon genutzt haben.

Sie sind die Hüter:innen der Erde, die wahren Expert:innen für Kreisläufe, Vielfalt und Balance.

Doch sie stehen unter Druck: Die Böden geben weniger her, das Klima verändert sich, Regenzeiten verschieben sich, und die Preise auf den Märkten bleiben ungerecht. Die Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) sagt dazu: “Afrika braucht keine industrialisierte Landwirtschaft, sondern ein tief verwurzeltes System lokaler Ernährungssouveränität – basierend auf Biodiversität, Bodenfruchtbarkeit und bäuerlichem Wissen.“ AFSA Policy Paper 2023

Was heißt eigentlich „Boden regenerieren“?

Wenn wir sagen, dass wir die Böden heilen wollen, meinen wir: Wir wollen der Erde unterstützen, wieder zu atmen. Regeneration bedeutet, dass der Boden wieder lebendig wird, dass er Wasser speichern kann, Regenwürmer zurückkehren, Pflanzenvielfalt wächst und der Wind die obere Schicht nicht mehr wegbläst. Das passiert, wenn wir den Boden nicht mehr ständig umgraben, wenn wir Mischkulturen anbauen, organisches Material zurückgeben, Bäume integrieren, Tiere gezielt weiden lassen, und wenn wir wieder zuhören, was die Natur braucht. Regenerative Landwirtschaft funktioniert mit der Natur, nicht gegen sie.

Der WWF beschreibt sie als Praxis, die „Humus aufbaut, Biodiversität wiederherstellt und gleichzeitig den Wasserkreislauf stabilisiert.“ WWF International, 2024

Der große Aha-Moment: CO₂, Kohlenstoff und der Boden

Viele glauben, dass nur Bäume CO₂ aus der Luft holen. Aber auch Böden können das und zwar in gewaltigem Ausmaß. Pflanzen atmen CO₂ ein, verwandeln es durch Sonnenlicht in Zucker, Blätter und Wurzeln. Ein Teil dieses Kohlenstoffs gelangt in den Boden, wo er als Humus oder organische Masse gespeichert bleibt.

Und genau dieser Kohlenstoff war vorher als CO₂ in der Luft. Wenn er im Boden bleibt, hilft er, die Erde fruchtbar zu machen und das Klima zu schützen. Ein Kilo gespeicherter Kohlenstoff bedeutet, dass 3,67 Kilo CO₂ aus der Atmosphäre verschwunden sind – einfache Chemie, riesige Wirkung.

Der Carbon Brief schreibt: „Die Ernährung von 8,2 Milliarden Menschen hängt von gesunden Böden ab. Über ein Drittel der weltweiten Agrarflächen gilt inzwischen als degradiert.“ Carbon Brief, 2023

Wissenschaftler:innen schätzen, dass, wenn weltweit alle landwirtschaftlichen Böden regenerativ bewirtschaftet würden, bis zu drei Milliarden Tonnen CO₂ pro Jahr im Boden gebunden werden könnten, etwa so viel, wie die EU jährlich ausstößt.

Warum Regeneration nur funktioniert, wenn Märkte gerecht sind

Wenn Bäuerinnen und Bauern weiter gezwungen sind, ihre Ernte zu Dumpingpreisen zu verkaufen, bleibt Regeneration ein schönes Wort aber keine Realität. Ein gesunder Boden braucht auch gesunde Märkte. Wenn das, was auf den Feldern wächst, fair bezahlt wird, wenn Menschen ihre Produkte selbst verarbeiten und vermarkten können, wenn sie Zugang zu Wissen, Technologie und Kapital haben, dann entsteht ein Kreislauf, der alle nährt. Ohne Gerechtigkeit gibt es keine Regeneration. Und ohne Regeneration keine Gerechtigkeit. Beides gehört zusammen wie Regen und Erde.

MOTHERLAND 2035 – 50 000 Bäuerinnen und Bauern für die Zukunft

Bis 2035 wollen wir mit 50 000 Bäuerinnen und Bauern in Afrika zusammenarbeiten, ihre Böden zu regenerieren, ihre Märkte zu stärken und ihre Gemeinschaften zu entfalten.

Die Erde will leben und wir auch

MOTHERLAND ist nicht nur ein Projekt, sondern eine Bewegung. Eine Bewegung, die sagt: Wir können die Dinge gemeinsam anders machen. Wir können Böden wieder aufbauen, Menschen stärken, Märkte umgestalten, wenn wir beginnen, die Welt wieder als lebendiges Ganzes zu sehen. When we talk about regeneration, we often picture green fields, abundant harvests, and thriving communities. But true regeneration begins deeper, in the soil, in that invisible layer that sustains life, culture, and hope. And yet, even in 2025, while “soil health” has become a global buzzword, there is still no universal standard for what it actually means. There are no consistent global benchmarks, no single set of metrics that capture the immense diversity of soils across regions, climates, and continents. What “healthy soil” looks like in Siaya County, Western Kenya, is not the same as in Northern Portugal or Southern Germany.

That’s precisely why our new collaboration with RHEA Soil Health Management is so significant, because it marks the beginning of measuring regeneration, not just believing in it.

MOTHERLAND: Orchestrating Regeneration at Ecosystem Scale

At MOTHERLAND, we see ourselves as an ecosystem orchestrator, a bridge between local farmers, African startups, and global partners who share one mission: to lift smallholder farming communities out of poverty through regenerative agriculture, fair markets, and lasting local value creation. Our approach goes beyond traditional development. We work hand in hand with African innovators, agritech companies, community-based organizations, and local schools, to co-create systems that allow farmers to produce better, waste less, earn more, and regenerate their land.

Healthy soils are the foundation of that transformation. When soil is alive, fertile, and rich in microbial life, farmers spend less on chemical inputs, face fewer crop failures, and recover faster from droughts.

Better soil means better yields. Better yields mean less post-harvest loss, the biggest hidden cause of poverty among smallholders. And less loss means farmers finally have something left to sell at a fair price. This is what MOTHERLAND stands for: a future where the value created in agriculture stays within the communities that produce it, not extracted by intermediaries, but reinvested locally, building resilience from the ground up.

Who is RHEA and why we partner

Rhea Soil Health Management is a Kenyan agritech company transforming how soil health is diagnosed and managed. Through affordable, rapid soil testing technologies and AI-driven agronomic insights, Rhea empowers farmers to understand what their soil needs, why it matters, and how better nutrient decisions lead to improved yields, lower losses, and stronger incomes.

Their model goes beyond testing, it builds long-term soil intelligence. Rhea offers both on-site soil analysis using portable devices that measure pH and macronutrients, and comprehensive lab testingthat reveals deeper chemical and biological properties. Each test result is translated into clear, crop-specific recommendations, accessible digitally and even through WhatsApp, where farmers and field officers can receive real-time feedback in local languages.

In this partnership, MOTHERLAND mobilizes and coordinates farmer groups, supports sampling logistics, and integrates RHEA’s services directly into our digital platforms. Farmers can now request, track, and receive soil testing results through familiar MOTHERLAND channels, seamlessly connecting data with everyday practice.

RHEA, in turn, onboards our farmers into their digital ecosystem, provides devices and sample materials, trains lead farmers and staff, and ensures that every report includes actionable insights tailored to the crops farmers actually grow.

The collaboration launches with a pilot phase of 1,000 farmers, large enough to produce meaningful insights, yet focused enough to refine workflows, digital experience, and behavior change at the community level.

Defining and measuring soil health

The FAO defines soil health as “the capacity of soil to function as a living system that sustains plants, animals, and humans.”

It’s not only about productivity, it’s about the soil’s ability to filter water, store carbon, and support biodiversity. Scientists now agree that soil health is a composite of physical, chemical, and biological dimensions. Physically, it’s about structure, porosity, and water infiltration. Chemically, it depends on nutrient balance, pH, and organic carbon. Biologically, it’s about the diversity and activity of soil microorganisms, the living web that drives all regeneration.

Yet, as multiple research reviews (FAO 2021, USDA NRCS 2023, MDPI Soil Biology Review 2024) emphasize, there are no global thresholds. Healthy soil in one ecosystem may look degraded in another. Soil vitality must be assessed relative to its own baseline, not in comparison to faraway standards.

That’s why our collaboration with RHEA begins with baseline mapping. Together, we are measuring where the soils of Siaya County stand today, physically, chemically, and biologically, accompanying our regenerative practices. Over the coming seasons, we will re-measure and track whether the soil becomes richer in organic matter, more porous, more biologically alive. Whether it holds water longer. Whether it recovers faster.

This is how regeneration becomes tangible, measurable change, rooted in data, guided by farmers. This is actually ancient wisdom and you know by heart when your land is fertile but due to plenty of systemic challenges we have lost the connection to our lands.

Beyond data: Soil as living infrastructure

What makes this partnership special is not only its scientific rigor but its human depth.

Through our data and MOTHERLAND networks, we are building one of the first farmer-centered soil intelligence systems in East Africa, linking soil vitality with farmer income, post-harvest efficiency, and community wellbeing. We see this as part of a larger system change: regeneration not as a niche practice, but as a new economic logic, where the soil, the farmer, and the market are connected in a circular, fair, and transparent way.

Healthy soils are the quiet engines of this transformation. They reduce dependency on imported inputs, lower costs, increase yields, and make smallholder farmers more resilient. They directly reduce post-harvest losses by improving the quality and consistency of crops. And by creating traceable, data-backed production systems, they open access to fairer markets, where farmers are not invisible suppliers, but recognized partners in global value chains.

Listening to the Earth

This collaboration is not just about measurement , it’s about relationship. It’s about learning to listen to the soil, to understand how it responds when cared for differently, and to rebuild the trust between people and the land they depend on. By combining scientific precision with community knowledge, RHEA and MOTHERLAND are co-creating a living experiment in what regenerative transformation looks like, one that starts below ground, but reaches all the way to how value, dignity, and opportunity flow through an ecosystem.

Because regeneration doesn’t start with the plant. It starts with the soil. And from there, with everything that grows out of it: food, livelihoods, and a future worth living.

At MOTHERLAND, our mission is to regenerate food systems from the ground up—rooted in local farmer agency, ecological resilience, and full-value-chain transparency. Since early 2023, our collaboration with eProd Solutions has played a pivotal role in advancing this vision across Siaya County in Western Kenya.

eProd Solutions is more than a software provider: it is our digital backbone. Its supply-chain management platform, designed specifically for agribusinesses working with thousands of suppliers and smallholder farmers, enables us to trace every step of the value chain: from the planting of seed, through aggregation, processing, sale, to the table. This “seed-to-table” traceability is no longer an abstract concept, but a lived, operational reality.

Working together, we collect and analyse real-time data across multiple dimensions: farmer profiles, input loans, yields, quality grades, training attendance, processing outcomes, sales and repayments. These insights give us clarity: we know where we stand, day by day, and can respond dynamically, in the field, at aggregation points, and at the enterprise level. More than that, we are generating the evidence base funders and markets increasingly look for: clear indicators of improvement in productivity, incomes, post-harvest losses, market access and sustainability.

eProd’s platform is designed around exactly the kinds of challenges we face: managing large numbers of suppliers, establishing transparency and accountability, enabling effective communication between our local impact team and farmers, linking quality-based payment to outcomes, and meeting evolving export and regulatory standards (for example traceability compliance).  For us at MOTHERLAND, this means we can move beyond piecemeal interventions to a truly holistic system: where the technology infrastructure enables the human-centred relationships, and the data enables the on-the-ground transformation.

However, this partnership is about much more than the software. From the very beginning, eProd has been a steady, strategic ally. They trained our field team, they adapted the system to our specific context in Siaya County, and they stood by us during every pilot, hiccup and iteration. Their support has enabled our teams to work confidently, knowing the digital backbone will hold up. In particular, our close working relationship with eProd’s co-founder, Almut van Casteren, has been instrumental. Her accessibility, strategic insight and genuine investment in our shared mission have created a partnership built on trust and alignment.

What does this mean in concrete terms for funders and partners considering investment in MOTHERLAND’s model? It means that our interventions are not only grounded in field-work and local relationships, but underpinned by robust digital infrastructure and real-time monitoring. It means that we have visibility into value-chain performance, accountability in farmer outcomes, and the ability to scale with precision. It means that when you invest in MOTHERLAND’s network, you are investing in a model where tech, human capital and local ecosystems come together in synergy. eProd Solutions provides the systemic foundation; MOTHERLAND provides the regenerative logic, the local networks, and the on-the-ground change.

After almost a year of quiet, grounded work in the fields of Siaya, we are back, not with noise, but with the kind of steady progress that grows from deep roots. Between January and October 2025, MOTHERLAND has continued to prove that African farmers can lead Africa’s agricultural transformation, when given fair systems, regenerative tools, and access to digital knowledge.

This year, our collective work has continuously revolved around one simple idea: connecting African farmers with African solutions. From aggregating community harvests to digitizing data and testing AI-driven training tools, every step has been a conversation between land, people, and technology. We began the year with the aggregation of 3.5 tonnes of Nyota beans, collected from 250 farmers across Siaya County. What sounds like just numbers actually represents hundreds of fair transactions, moments when a farmer is paid on time, at a transparent price, for the food they grow. This reliability builds something more precious than profit: it builds trust.

Once aggregated, more than 4.3 tonnes of beans went through a meticulous process of sorting, drying, and treatment under our supervision. The goal was not only to prepare the produce for markets but also to raise the quality standards for seed certification. By October, 4,300 kilograms of beans had been stored and accounted for: 3,520 kg from the long-rains season, 780 kg of additional stock from community groups, 1,622 kg already sold, 1,500 kg prepared for the upcoming short-rains season as seed input, and 1,178 kg still in storage.

In total, these transactions generated a market value of roughly 3,855 Euro, with prices rising from about 0.90 Euro per kilogram at aggregation to 1.03 Euro in retail sales across Ugunja and surrounding markets. The increase may seem small on paper, but it represents a meaningful step toward community-level profitability and local market confidence.

Beyond logistics, 2025 was also a year of learning and digital strengthening. Together with our partners at eProd, we prepared and deployed a farmer data-collection tool that reached 143 farmers from 29 groups. The insights were powerful: 77 % noticed climate shifts, 56 % adapted their farming practices, 36 % began soil-conservation methods, and 78 % expressed interest in deeper climate-smart agriculture. These findings have become the backbone of Motherland’s future planning, proof that knowledge, when measured, becomes action.

On the production side, MOTHERLAND secured and supervised three test acres of certified bean-seed production, in partnership with KALRO and KEPHIS, ensuring full compliance with national regulations. At the same time, 150 farmers from our regenerative agriculture program received hands-on training in soil health, crop rotation, and organic pest management. These trainings are not theoretical, they are living exchanges where farmers co-design the future of their fields.

The eProd system itself was upgraded this year to align with MOTHERLAND’s new key performance indicators. Real-time tracking now makes it possible to see, at any given moment, who has received seeds, who has repaid, and which aggregation centers are most active. This level of transparency strengthens accountability and opens the door for future AI-driven analytics.

As the year moved into its second half, MOTHERLAND onboarded 353 new farmers for the short-rains season, distributing 1.5 tonnes of Nyota bean seeds as revolving seed loans. This model, where each harvest contributes to the next, embodies the regenerative cycle we are building: one that restores both soil and social equity.

Meanwhile, our AI chatbot prototype began its first field tests. Designed to run via WhatsApp, it offers localized advice, basic training modules, and real-time data collection. It’s an experiment in digital inclusion, ensuring that the next wave of agricultural intelligence speaks not just English or code, but the languages of the communities it serves.

Looking back, the numbers tell a story of quiet growth: from 3,500 kg of beans aggregated at the start of the year to 1,500 kg of new seed loans distributed this season, a 41 % increase in farmer participation within ten months. But behind every number are faces, families, and fields that now breathe a little easier because systems are starting to work for them.

The lessons are clear. Integrating digital tools with regenerative practices creates measurable, long-term impact. Transparency in pricing strengthens participation and trust. Local leadership, by young agronomists, women, and extension officers, accelerates resilience. And data-driven platforms, from eProd to AI, are reshaping how rural communities learn, decide, and grow.

A Recap of Recent Progress: From May to October 2024

The past few months have been a true testament to the strength and commitment of our team and partners. Here’s a brief look at what’s been happening on the ground:

May 2024: Our team began preparations for the upcoming planting season amidst extreme weather variability. MOTHERLAND closely monitored over 300 smallholder farms to assess the impacts of these conditions on bean and chia crops in Gori village and provided vital support to stabilise yields. Introducing more climate-resilient crop varieties and enhancing water management systems helped minimise potential losses and build farmer resilience against future shocks.

June 2024: As bean harvesting season began, we faced the challenge of post-harvest losses, which can reach up to 30% in some areas. MOTHERLAND provided hermetic storage bags and drying materials to 150 families in Siaya, significantly reducing spoilage and increasing marketable produce. This intervention alone boosted farmer income by an average of 20%, allowing them to reinvest in their farms and send their children to school.

July 2024: One of the biggest threats we addressed was the invasive Striga weed, which devastates cereal crops, leading to losses of up to 100%. With the help of the Young Earth Guardians, we launched a community campaign to introduce integrated pest management strategies, including crop rotation and the use of resistant seed varieties. Over 100 children actively participated, sharing their newfound knowledge with their families and reinforcing the importance of sustainable farming practices.

August 2024: We kicked off a series of workshops on regenerative agricultural practices and climate change awareness for our dedicated farmers and the Young Earth Guardian School students. These sessions focused on the principles of conservation agriculture—minimal soil disturbance, maintaining soil cover, and crop rotation—which are essential for building long-term soil health and enhancing resilience.

September 2024: As short rains approached, the team distributed seeds from last season’s harvest to over 200 farmers, ensuring they planted varieties adapted to local conditions. Using seeds that have demonstrated resilience helps maintain genetic integrity and lowers the need for costly external inputs. This is foundational in building a seed sovereignty movement within the community.

October 2024: Our most recent initiative involved setting up nursery beds for approximately 2,000–3,000 indigenous trees in two villages. This effort, driven by our Young Earth Guardians, aims to restore soil fertility, increase biodiversity, and create natural windbreaks. These young stewards have led this reforestation project, demonstrating the power of youth-led conservation efforts.

The Young Earth Guardian School: Cultivating Future Stewards

At the core of our strategy is the Young Earth Guardian School Project, an initiative that combines practical agricultural training with a broader vision for community transformation. Currently, the program is running in two schools (pap gori primary and Lolwe primary), with plans to expand to five pilot schools over the coming year, directly educating over 2,500 students.

Each school is a live learning centre where students are taught to establish and maintain organic vegetable gardens. Under the mentorship of Joseph, a local farmer skilled in regenerative techniques, the children learn everything from permaculture design to composting, natural pest management, and sustainable water use. 

Through hands-on learning, the students gain more than technical knowledge—they develop a sense of ownership and pride in their role as land stewards. 

The ripple effect is tangible: 50% of parents engaged in agriculture are now adopting the techniques taught by their children, contributing to a community-wide shift towards sustainable practices.

A Systemic Solution for Climate Resilience and Community Empowerment

The long-term impact of the Young Earth Guardian School Project is systemic. By transforming schools into hubs of regenerative learning, we are creating a network of young leaders who will carry these values and skills into adulthood. This project equips children to thrive in a climate-impacted world and sets the foundation for a resilient local economy based on sustainable agriculture. In a region where agriculture is often considered a poverty trap, we aim to reshape this perception—to make farming a viable, attractive, and dignified career choice.

The systemic potential of this program lies in its ability to catalyze a multi-generational transformation. As the children grow into leaders within their communities, the knowledge, and practices they acquire will spread, reducing environmental degradation, increasing food security, and creating a regenerative agricultural economy that can withstand future climate shocks.

Our journey is at a pivotal stage. We are laying a foundation in Siaya and in five pilot schools, covering essentials such as salaries, materials, and expert-led training sessions. Yet to realize the full impact of the Young Earth Guardians Program across all 67 schools in Siaya, additional resources are essential. The stakes are high: without further funding, we risk losing the momentum we’ve built and the chance to enable lasting change.

The Young Earth Guardians are not just learning regenerative agriculture—they are becoming leaders. They embody a new rural Africa that champions resilience, sustainability, and community.

ClimateNuts pflanzt Nahrungswälder in Afrika, die Mensch, Natur und Klima helfen. Nahrungswälder sind eine der effektivsten Lösungen gegen den Klimawandel. Sie speichern CO2 in Biomasse und Boden, erhöhen die Biodiversität und bieten den Menschen vor Ort Einkommen und Ernährungssicherung. ClimateNuts ist als eines von 5 Unternehmen für den German SDG Award 2023 nominiert worden.

MOTHERLAND kollaboriert mit afrikanischen Bauern und etablierten Start-ups, um systemisch Ernteverluste zu minimieren und florierende Gemeinschaften zu schaffen. Diese Gemeinschaften streben nach ökologischem Gleichgewicht, sozialem Wohlstand und ökonomischem Erfolg für jeden Einzelnen.

Wir sind einfach nur begeistert, euch ein mitreißendes Update über unser MOTHERLAND Pilotprojekt in Siaya County, in West Kenia, zu geben!

Wir haben binnen 7 Monaten unglaubliche Fortschritte gemacht. Mit der Unterstützung kenianischer Startups, unterstützen wir gerade 547 Kleinbauern, 250.000 kg Süßkartoffeln zu ernten und zu verkaufen. Diese 250.000 kg sind ehemals unangerührtes Potential und das ist erst der Anfang!

Es wird noch besser! Gemeinsam schaffen wir es, den Ernteverlust von nicht weniger als um 65%, sondern ganze 55% zu senken, auf lediglich unglaubliche 10%! Das hat enormen Einfluss auf die ökonomische Unabhängigkeit und Resilienz der MOTHERLAND Community vor Ort.

Aber es geht noch weiter: Der Gewinn pro Kilogramm Süßkartoffeln wurde von 30 Kenianischen Shilling auf 50 Kenianische Shilling erhöht! Unsere Bauern können jetzt stolz auf ihre Ernte sein und ein nachhaltiges Einkommen erzielen!

Und als ob das nicht genug wäre, haben wir auch noch einen innovativen Community Fonds ins Leben gerufen, der sich mit etwa 20 Shilling pro Kilo Süßkartoffeln füllt und von der Gemeinschaft selbst verwaltet wird. Das bedeutet, dass unsere Initiative nicht nur nachhaltige Ergebnisse liefert, sondern auch die Gemeinschaft befähigt, ihr eigenes Schicksal in die Hand zu nehmen und Investitionen zu tätigen, die das Wohlergehen der gesamten Community fördern.

Unser Team ruht sich auf diesen unglaublichen Erfolgen nicht aus und hat ein Kinder- und Jugendprogramm ins Leben gerufen: Earth Keepers. Die Earth Keepers befähigen nachfolgende Generationen, regenerative Methoden der Landwirtschaft gepaart mit neuen Technologien und der Weisheit der älteren Generation erfolgreich und nachhaltig anzuwenden. Wir bauen gemeinsam eine generationsübergreifende Brücke, die altes Wissen respektiert und neue Methoden im Zusammenschluss in eine gute Zukunft für alle Kinder aller Spezies vorantreibt. Bisher sind 180 Kinder dabei und die Zahl wächst täglich!

Wir setzen unsere Mission fort, um den Ernteverlust in weiteren Wertschöpfungsketten wie Mais, Bohnen und Avocados gemeinsam mit den afrikanischen Kleinbauern und StartUps zu optimieren. Wir wollen die Bauerngemeinschaften in ganz Kenia erreichen und unser Erfolgsmodell replizieren, sodass noch mehr Familien von unseren begeisternden Ergebnissen profitieren können. Allein Siaya County hat 90.000 Kleinbauern und ganz Afrika 900.000 Millionen Kleinbauern. Die gesamte Zukunft im Bereich der Nahrungssicherheit und Bildung und Erhalt von gesunden Böden lastet auf den Schultern der Kleinbauern.

Natürlich können wir das alles nicht ohne unsere unglaublichen Unterstützer erreichen. Dank der großzügigen Projektfinanzierung der GIZ und der Unterstützung der Knodel Foundation haben wir den Grundstein gelegt.

Equipping farmers for success and recognizing quality's crucial role in meeting market demands. MOTHERLAND with KOAN took the initiative to provide specialized training to selected Trainer of Farmers (TOFs) from the community. These TOFs underwent comprehensive quality control and management training, enabling them to impart essential knowledge to the farmers. The training focused on safe harvest practices, emphasizing the importance of avoiding cuts, bruises, and damages that can affect the quality of sweet potatoes. By investing in quality training, we ensure that farmers are equipped with the skills to produce high-quality sweet potatoes that meet market standards.

Test Run and Insights: Paving the Way for Success

To gain valuable insights and fine-tune our operations, our team recently conducted a test run of the sweet potato project. The test run involved procuring and offtaking up to 1000 kilograms of sweet potatoes from dedicated farmers. This milestone was a crucial stepping stone towards a future where our efforts bear fruit. Through the test run, we aimed to understand the intricacies of the process, identify potential challenges, and gather insights to refine our operations. One major takeaway from this experience was the urgent need to provide quality training to farmers on safe harvest practices. This insight has laid the foundation for our upcoming farmer quality training sessions to address this vital aspect.

Expanding Offtake and Commitment: Scaling Up for Success 

Building on the success of the test run, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of our offtake operations. Starting mid-July, our off-takers will purchase up to 21 tonnes of sweet potatoes weekly, depending on the harvest. This milestone is a testament to our commitment to farmers and our dedication to driving positive change in our MOTHERLAND communities. We express our deep gratitude to our partner organizations, including Duhqa, eProd Solutions Limited, and KOAN, as well as the entire team for their relentless efforts in achieving this success. Through their resilience and passion, we have been inspired to push boundaries and create a significant impact in the agricultural sector.

Traceability and Startup Technology: Ensuring Transparency and Trust

In today's world, traceability is vital in ensuring transparency and accountability within supply chains. To address this need, we are excited to introduce personalized identity cards developed by eProd in our sweet potato project. These identity cards are more than just recognition; they are gateways to a traceable agricultural ecosystem. By assigning unique identifiers to each farmer, we establish a robust system that tracks the journey of every sweet potato from farm to table. Our fully digital process, incorporating ID cards, a digital Bluetooth-enabled scale, the eProd ERP system, and seamless payment via M-Pesa, worked flawlessly in the test run. The farmer received their money in their M-Pesa account right after their delivery. This integration of technology enhances efficiency and traceability, allowing us to ensure the integrity of our supply chain. With enhanced traceability, we can guarantee the origin and quality of our products, build trust with our off-takers and partner startups, and ensure a sustainable and transparent agricultural system. Moreover, introducing these identity cards symbolizes recognition, empowerment, and belonging for the farmers, opening up a world of opportunities for them. By embracing technology and traceability, we pave the way for a more accountable, sustainable, and inclusive agricultural sector.

The Importance of Quality: A Cornerstone of Our Mission

Quality takes centre stage as MOTHERLAND embarks on the journey to empower farmers and bring about positive change among sweet potato growers in Siaya. Ensuring that our off-takers receive sweet potatoes that adhere to their specific standards and are nothing short of perfect is paramount. Quality assurance of sweet potatoes begins right from the moment seedlings are planted through the entire growth process and extends to the harvest and post-harvest handling. It encompasses various factors such as size, maturity, taut skin, freedom from termite infestation, absence of cracks or cuts, and, most importantly, taste, texture, nutritional value, and safety. Achieving the desired quality requires collaboration among farmers and stakeholders.

And lastly, one startup is taking care of the logistics from the local collection of the sweet potato to the transport and the warehouse in Nairobi.

As we build a family here in Siaya and beyond, we must work with children and youth to share our educative program around soil health and the power of regenerative agriculture. We recognize the "Youth Erosion" - the alarming disinterest among African youths in agriculture. Given that over 61 percent of Africa's population is under 25 years old and the average farmer over 60, this disinterest poses severe threats to future food security and poverty reduction efforts. Thus, we are committed to building an inter-generational bridge between the young and older people in the MOTHERLAND ecosystem. We are developing an educational program that teaches children and young people about the benefits of regenerative agriculture, the importance of biodiversity, and the impact of climate change on food systems. By instilling these values in the younger generation, we hope to create a culture of sustainability that will benefit future generations.

Inspiration from a Champion of Conservation Agriculture Motherland🌍 recently had the pleasure of meeting an inspiring farmer, Joseph, in a village called Gori in Siaya, who is committed to practising safe and sustainable agricultural practices. Joseph walked us around his farm, talking us through all his knowledge, and from his facial expressions, we could see how passionate he was. He practices minimal tillage, which helps to conserve soil moisture, reduces soil erosion, and promotes soil health. He also has a vermicompost produced by himself, which he uses to enrich his soil with organic matter and nutrients and uses the juice/liquid from the compost as a pesticide. His practices benefit his own farm and contribute to the health and well-being of his community and the environment.

The first stop was Nairobi: Having the exciting opportunity to meet with 50 African agri-tech startups and investors at the SAIStival hosted by GIZ in Nairobi. The positive feedback from entrepreneurs across Africa validated the idea of MOTHERLAND, which aims to address the challenges of market-making for African startups in rural communities.

Imagine starting a European startup without any payment, finance, logistics, supply, market intelligence, or customer access infrastructure. That's the reality for many African startups operating in rural communities. MOTHERLAND aims to solve that by bringing an array of complementary startup solutions to a rural community with the help of local implementation teams. The goal is to set up the required digital service infrastructure to enable startups to thrive in rural communities.

The overwhelming feedback from the SAIStival conference was the interest in starting MOTHERLAND Hubs in other African countries, like Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Namibia, and Tanzania. MOTHERLAND could become the independent hub to orchestrate different complementary startups. Startups could ally to start a MOTHERLAND Hub in selected communities in their home markets. The regional MOTHERLAND Hub would become the independent orchestrator of such an alliance.

My visit to Siaya was the main highlight of the journey. Working with the team to analyze and select the first value chain was essential to moving forward with a clear focus. After a thorough analysis and discussion based on field research, together with the team, we decided to focus on the sweet potato value chain for the pilot. The growing season ends in June, allowing them to create the intended value in the post-harvest value chain. Additionally, the current post-harvest losses are substantial and could become an economic game changer for smallholder farmers if solved. Currently, farmers lose 50% of their harvest due to volatile offtaking and 50% in value due to poor prices paid by middlemen.

The team also had a crucial presentation and inquiry of MOTHERLAND to the County Agriculture Sector Steering Committee (CASSCOM), including the Minister of Agriculture of Siaya County. The presentation was met with tough questions – oh boy, we got grilled – but the team's dedication, insights, and persistence were enough to receive a clear go-ahead and commitment to supporting MOTHERLAND.

Visiting a farmer group and conversing with them was an eye-opening experience. I learned first-hand about the challenges and the solutions already in place or in the making. The farmer we visited already practices organic regenerative techniques that create compost, compost tea, and organic pesticides. Additionally, they use agroforestry and cover crops instead of mechanical ploughing. By doing so, the fertility of the soil thrives, and resilience against drought is better than neighbouring farmers. However, growing challenges caused by drought are imminent.

An idea occurred during the community visit to start a "little" regenerative agriculture school for the kids and youngsters of the community. Teaching and experiencing the opportunities to work with nature, e.g. how to create compost, why biodiversity and trees matter to soil health, fertility, and resilience against droughts. Engaging with the kids in a way that shows that farming is cool and essential for a good and flourishing live for them and their families. I cannot wait to see the first "little school" taking place.

It is incredible to receive so much support for the concept of MOTHERLAND on the ground due to the excellent work of the team and the many stakeholders who will be vital in driving the development of MOTHERLAND beyond the single pilot they are running now. The founder acknowledges the supporters of the project, starting with Philipp Tettenborn and the team of the whole GIZ SAIS program, Patrick Knodel of the Knodel Foundation, all members of the CASSCOM, and all the countless people who give feedback and make introductions needed to grow the network of MOTHERLAND supporters and ambassadors.

In conclusion, the Team of MOTHERLAND is on their way to solving the challenges of market-making for African startups by simultaneously creating better livelihoods for rural communities. The sweet potato value chain for the pilot has the potential to prove the economic impact on smallholder farmers very soon with hard numbers. The team received support from the CASSCOM.

This trend has also been the same in Siaya County, where farming and agriculture have traditionally been the backbone of the region's economy, providing food and income for its residents. The young and old have played a crucial role in agriculture and have worked together for millennials to ensure the success and sustainability of farming their methods and practices.

As we are starting our journey in Siaya County to uplift and empower farmers, we noticed that we are only meeting with the elderly and very few youths. This raised a growing concern about why many young people are less involved in farming and agriculture than they once were. We discovered several reasons for this and continue researching and understanding this trend.

One of the main observations is young people's negative perception of farming and agriculture. Many consider it challenging, low-paying, and unglamorous. They do not see it as a viable option or be aware of the potential benefits of agricultural work. This perception has been reinforced by poor harvests and a desire for easy money, leading to a growing trend of young people choosing easier ways of getting cash than engaging in farming. Young people are often characterized by negative stereotypes about their capabilities, making it difficult to prove themselves and break out of these negative perceptions.

One of our favorite research topics is the benefits of staying in the villages and engaging in farming. Especially regenerative agriculture offers the potential for a sustainable livelihood and could be a vital income source for many rural communities. Young people who stay in their villages and engage in farming could create economic opportunities, ecological health, creating jobs, and promote local economic development.

Through our fieldwork, we found that many farmers in Siaya County still use conventional farming methods, and the young people are not interested in learning these methods. We believe that by having access to innovative and regenerative farming methods, young people can adopt these new approaches, combine them with the wisdom and learnings from their elders, preserve their communities' traditional knowledge and practices, and merge them with future agricultural knowledge.

Besides the economic benefits and the preservation of traditional knowledge, agriculture can also help to promote environmental regeneration, preserve soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and encourage biodiversity. Young people who stay in their villages and engage in farming can help to promote these practices and contribute to a promising future. Agriculture could become a community activity that can help promote social cohesion and a sense of shared responsibility. We still learn so much from our engagement with the different farmer communities. We are researching the numerous benefits of staying in the villages and engaging in farming for young people, the community, and the wider society. We need to understand the negative perceptions and stereotypes associated with agriculture more profoundly and promote the potential benefits of sustainable farming practices based on our insights related to the precise needs of the youth. By encouraging youth participation in farming, we can create a more inclusive and resilient agriculture system that benefits everyone, especially in Siaya County. We dream of a MOTHERLAND “Young Earth Guardians Academy” where we plant the seeds of a regenerative future - where young minds grow to love and nurture healthy soil through regenerative agriculture. We would love to empower the next generation of young people to learn directly about the positive impact of regenerative agriculture and share their inspiration with their parents and communities about the infinite benefit of healthy soil.

Usually, they are accomplished by a group of people, and when everyone is committed to the overall goal, teams move faster, more innovative, and more successful. Motherland was envisioned about three years ago by great-minded individuals with a big and bold vision that requires knowledge, grit, skills, patience, passion, and so much more to build it. Motherland is an organization that will improve the agricultural and farming practices in local communities within Siaya County in Kenya by working closely with local farmers and African startups to implement sustainable and regenerative solutions. Therefore, Motherland has engaged a dedicated team to create positive change and a brighter future for the community in Siaya.

Our team consists of individuals with diverse professional backgrounds, including agronomists, environmentalists, psychologists, artists, creatives, farmers, and economists. This diversity of expertise allows the team to take a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by farmers. The environmental scientist will be able to study the local ecosystem and identify ways that farmers implement more sustainable practices that protect soil health and conserve natural resources. Also, gives advice on digital technology and data, precision farming to improve crop yields and reduce costs by optimizing planting and harvesting times, as well as nutrient and water use. The psychologist will be able to interview farmers to develop problem-solving and decision-making skills to improve their ability to make effective decisions related to their farming practices. And to create effective communication strategies that address their concerns and promote sustainable and regenerative practice adoption.

As much as we might be diverse, we have one thing in common: We are passionate about uplifting, empowering, and working with the communities to bring change in the best ways possible. We are driven by the same goal.

Having a local impact team is a unique approach to solving pre- and post-harvest challenges in agriculture not only here in Siaya but globally. Only by working closely with farmers and other stakeholders can the team identify the most pressing challenges and develop tailored solutions that are sustainable, regenerative, and effective. One of the critical strengths of the local impact team is the ability to understand the specific needs of the local community.

Our pilot in Siaya County in Kenya is set to commence in January 2023. We have an amazing team on the ground that is very passionate and ideal to helping Motherland achieve its goals of accelerating the development of communities by systematically understanding their unique challenges. We are confident that with this team in place and the support of our partners, our pilot will be a success and set the stage for a wider rollout of the program throughout Africa.

Sylvester Catherine is a 27-year-old Psychologist from Kenya who strongly believes that the purpose of human life is to serve and to show compassion and the will to help. She is a liberal, feminist, and humanitarian who has worked with individuals from underprivileged groups, encouraging, supporting, and providing them with guidance and chances to initiate social change and transform their own communities. She has worked with individuals and communities championing the betterment of their mental health and improvement of quality of life in all aspects.She is very enthusiastic about being part of the Motherland team because the main thing that provides meaning in her life is ensuring the well-being of people. She thrives at making a positive change, however small, and improving the lives of individuals and communities to create a good world and a sustainable community in whichever way she can.

Violet Atieno, is a 25-year-old Environmentalist from Siaya. She is deeply passionate about protecting the natural world and promoting sustainable living. Violet has a degree in Environmental Science and has worked with various organizations to promote conservation and sustainability. She believes that by working together and using our resources responsibly, we can create a better future for all. Violet is excited to be a part of the Motherland team and creating a more sustainable and prosperous community in Siaya. She believes that by working directly with local communities and supporting their ideas, we can create positive change.

Nicholas Siso is a 29-year-old with a degree in agronomy. He is very passionate about agriculture and climate change. He sees agriculture as one of the forces for good in his community. He has a background in agribusiness and has worked with various organizations to create sustainable solutions for social and environmental issues. He believes that with the right support and resources, local communities have the potential to drive their own development and create lasting change. Siso is excited to be a part of the Motherland team and work towards improving the lives of the people in Siaya.
